Dirk's 44 keeps Mavs hopes alive

Hey Denver, time to put away those brooms, 'cause there isn't going to be no sweep around Dallas.

The Mavs, lead by no other than Dirk Nowitzki, came through in style as they rallied to win against the Nuggets 119-117.

Dirk was amazing; carrying the team on his back like he usually does, most especially in this series. 44 points; 19 of them coming from the 4th alone. That's a big difference from what he's been putting out in the last quarter of play in the past games this round. He's really coming into his own, and might I add, he showed a couple glimpses of defense.

What also fascinated me was the way he was attacking the basket. Now if you haven't already known or figured out, but Dirk's typically not the type of player that would slash his way to the basket like a Josh Howard would do, but he has made do with what he has; 7-foot, 245 pound frame coming at you. That should be something others can be frightened of.

There's also a stereotype that most Europeans that are in the NBA are known not to be hard nose, but to be soft; a frail piece of imported cardboard holding a leather orange ball. Which I think is right, sorry to say. I mean, most of the Euros that would play the game of basketball are always lengthy, tall and lean; wouldn't seem like they've got a lot of meat on them or look like much but they'd shoot the living daylights out of you.

The perfect specimen: Dirk Nowitzki. The patented sick fadeaway of his = flat out money.

He pretty much stands out alone as arguably THE [Notice the all caps.] best premier jump shooter coming from foreign soil. Does a lot of stuff many people his size cannot do.

He's one of my idols and I'm just glad he's on our team; I expect more of the same again with Dirk as we fight to stay alive vs. the dreaded Nuggets.

The Mavs just need to stay clear from the "thugs" out on the court. We don't need any of that nonsense. Hah.

Underdog Mavs win the Battle of Texas

We got it made. Well so far.

The Mavs, who were clearly the underdog in the this bout between elite state rivals came out and came through the first round. Both teams really came with it in the games

But Dallas was clearly the stronger team.

San Antonio definitely has the experience; note that they’re also the oldest team in the league with wily veterans like Duncan, former Mav Mike Finley, as well as a few others that are probably “weak at the knees.”

Dallas was pretty much too much for them; Manu Ginobili was no where to be found on the court other than on the bench with a suit and unbuttoned shirt.

Now, it’s now an even tough task at hand as the home town heroes take to the Mile High City to go up against the Denver Nuggets, where they, the Mavs, have not won a game against them this season. (0-4)

Then again, Josh Howard and Jason Kidd were not a part of the games.

Let’s see how the tide turns when they’re present.

Dirk and Co. back again; Championship days

It’s that time of year, and the Dallas Mavericks are ready to get the season underway.

So far, it’s a been an okay start; at .500, 2-2, with their last victory was over the hated rival San Antonio, beating them 95-81.

Didn’t watch or know that they were playing the other day, due to the ’08 Presidential Election, with Barack Obama winning. [So dang happy that night; history in the making.] So basically the Mavericks were the last thing on my mind, sorry to say.

During the off-season, Dallas brought in former ESPN analyst, ex-Pistons and Pacers’ coach Rick Carlisle. He’s coached in an NBA championship before, so he should know how to right this ship here in Big-D and actually let us finish a championship run unlike the falter we had with Miami in ’06.

Yeah, the Mavericks did blow a 13 point lead with 6:38 left in the 4th quarter in Game 3; never forgetting that.

Although at the same time, all of us Mavs fans know that the refs had something up their sleeves, some way, some how, to fix that series. I still think the league commissioner, David Stern, should go back and get those officials responsible for calling those sissy calls in Dwyane Wade’s favor.

If you’ve been watching the NBA closely as I have with David Stern as the commissioner, you know absolutely nothing’s going to happen, because he’s just scared of losing money and losing respect among his peers and colleagues around the league.

Basically, it’s all about himself and not about the NBA as a whole. In a business, I’m sure you’d have to have those kind of risky gambles here and there, i.e. big bossman himself, Mr. Jerry Jones.

Coming together collectively on a task at hand would be beneficiary for all to become better business people, and I’m really wanting a better head guy in front than Stern.

[Sorry about going off topic from the Mavs, to Commissioner Stern; it’s just been still, to this day, bugging me about how the whole situation was handled.]

*I’m hoping some day Mark Cuban actually gets the chance to raise the Larry O’Brien trophy along with the team and sock it to Stern; just to make up for all the fines he’s collected from him, costing over $1M total.

Only time will tell.

'Texas Fight'-ing On

The Texas Longhorns are finally back on top where they ought to be; #1 in the country.

Well in my opinion, anyway.

After a thrilling victory over hated rival's Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry in Dallas, and a big statement win over #13 Missouri in at home.

So a lot of people are happy and harnessing joy right now with what's going on w/ the 'Horns in '40 acres'; I know I sure am.

Out of one of the players on the team that should be happy is Texas’ QB Colt McCoy. McCoy; a guy from the small town of Tuscola, Texas, really seems like a grounded, down-to-earth kind of guy. What I notice from him is that he’s a faithful Christian at heart, which is something common that the two of us possess. After every game, when a sideline reporter from ABC or ESPN want to question him after a huge win, he always comes out saying before anything the initial question had asked; “I just gotta give God the glory…”, or like something along the lines of that quote. That’s what really got me and it’s had me hooked on his play ever since he was a redshirt freshman backing up the past Texas great Vince Young.

Everyone is well aware of how Vince could take control of a game with his feet; but also with his arm. All of a sudden, this year McCoy’s has shot out of a cannon this year in perfectionate form, w/ his team’s style of play, rank, and his stats to prove it.

Last year, which was Colt’s sophomore year, he discovered the usual ‘sophomore slump’ that a common athlete would go through, having a strikingly high number of interceptions and the TD number’s were par level, but what he’s done this year has really caught the eyes of spectators nation wide.

Therefore he’s the leading front-runner for the Heisman trophy; completing the ball to the receiver over 80% of the time. The Longhorns now on top of the fresh new BCS rankings that were unveiled this week; first time they’ve been voted #1 in the regular season since ’84.

Not just all the credit goes to Colt alone. The rest of the guys that are making it happen; WRs Jordan Shipley, who’s gotten a TD grab in all 7 games so far in the season, and Quan Cosby; who’s been wanting to start up a baseball career; has for a short time, but then had second thoughts about it and decided to play football, and thank goodness he did just that.

Also, credit has to go to the head coach, Mack Brown, who knows that this team “has been a team since day one.” Newly acquisitioned defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, whose fire and intensity really gets the defensive players on the team up on their toes and ready for anything that’ll come their way. Pretty much, the entire coaching staff for getting the players ready, focused, and ready to rock on Saturday mornings, afternoons or evenings.

As a fan of his and a fan of the Longhorns, period, (I’m very interested into going to UT after high school to pursue a career as a pharmacist; can’t settle for less.) I’m really proud of what he [Colt McCoy] has accomplished so far.

Coming in after the Texas great who led the team to 2 consecutive Rose Bowls; second one in ’05-’06 being for the National Championship (Young becoming MVP of both; championship game vs. USC; runs for 200, passes for 267.), to now being the little guy who’s got a lot of potential, yet a lot to learn-

And I think he’s doing just fine. The team’s doing just fine, and at this rate with what the Longhorns have got going for them, they’ll definitely be in the driver’s seat for the 6th national championship in Texas football history.

I’ll definitely keep believin’ and giving God the glory; for something special to come out of this wonderful ride that is the 2008-2009 Texas Longhorns’ team.

Hook ‘em.
